I went a little crazy when I was 18 and spent the winter climbing alone in Joshua Tree California. I imagined angels would catch me if I ever fell. It was cool because I had the whole park to myself most days. One time I was walking off a route I had just climbed and back to the ground when I heard a man's voice say "Boy...that's just about the most dangerous thing they is". There were days and days where I wouldn't see another person at all so I was surprised to see a family of four leaning up against their motor home, their dad a giant fat man with shorts, flip flops, an FBI t-shirt on and a camera wrapped around his much too thick wrist.
What pops into my head now is the accent...The way he said "they is"...a southern lilt that seemed so out of place in the desert. Some days it repeats in my head like that "they is they is they is". "The most dangerous thing they is."
