I was taking with a guy who scrambles at a much higher level than I do about his near death experience on mount Northover. On the block he got of course and had much more difficult unroped moves than he expected and got to the point where he was exhausted just trying to hang on. A fall meant death. He said at one point is mind was telling his body just to let go. He figures that some kind of instinctive fight or flight response was trying to tell his body to eliminate the pain of hanging on. He fought through the urge to let go and reversed the move and got out of danger but said after he understood why people who end up just appearing to let go.
