This isn't true. Spiderman and Spiderman 2 are the #3 and #4 movies for box office, both domestically and, once adjusted for inflation, internationally. Even Spiderman 3, which was total trash, beat Homecoming at the box office, once adjusted for inflation.

Deadpool also beat all of the Marvel solo movies in the box office, with the exception of Black Panther, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Civil War (debatable if a solo film).

Personally, I'd rather have variety, than have all the heros under Disney's banner. The X-men are a franchise in their own right. I'd rather have movies like Logan, Deadpool, X-men: First Class, etc.. than another 2-3 Marvel films per year. I preferred Logan, Deadpool, and X-men First Class to most MCU films.
