They've had good success lately. But if we are comparing them "building through the draft" and not via trades, it kind of ignores that they have two players in the top six not from their drafts and Calgary has one. Their third line is totally not drafted by them, and Calgary's is (well, Hathaway was undrafted but signed with them). Calgary's fourth line is all imported product whereas the Jets' isn't. On half of Calgary's is developed in Calgary's system and half are imports and the Jets are about the same (though, like I said, two are holdovers from Atlanta's drafting).
The difference is really their top pick Laine versus Bennett. Connor isn't better than Gaudreau, Ehlers isn't better than Tkachuk IMO. Scheifle is arguably better than Monny but it's not night and day or anything.
If Bennett turn it around and Jankowski improves in his second year (a lot) and if Ferland maintains people will say "look at how Calgary built through the draft". Really, it all turned on Bennett. If he turns out great, as would be expected with his draft position, Calgary has as deep a drafted team up front as Winnipeg.
