Kovalchuk is the best solution to our RW dilemma and costs nothing but money.
I wouldn't worry about trading Backlund and how it would look. A new coach, after a bad season, and it's the only chance to trade him for the length of the contract. Other players would understand the business of it.
And I like ROR better for this team.

I would say Tavares is substantially more plausible than Kovalchuk especially in your scenario where he picks Calgary to play on the 2nd line.
If I was a player moving forward I would second guess signing an extension in Calgary knowing the GM could trade me to the worst team in the league I do like RoR as a fit for the team.
I don’t know what you saw in the third pair this year that makes you think we could elevate them to the second pair and be fine. An injury away from Stone or Kulak playing top minutes.
It is all fantasy scenarios anyway. The forward ranks look good but that blueline is Oiler bad
