Hamilton was offersheet eligible. Knew Boston had already made an offer allegedly better then Calgary's. Why a guarantee that he would sitout and sign? And even then your plan is to force him to sitout, request a trade, and anger him and then hope next negotiations go well?
And still, yes, maybe you sign Hamilton for less total money - ignoring that he just lead the league in defenseman scoring and probably could have got a contract close to the one that would give him the same pay. But now instead of a 5.75M cap hit, he has a 6.75M if he signs at Gio's cap

You are picking stats from Hamilton's agent perspective.
He had 17 goals , tied with 2 other d-men
There were 14 d-men that had 14 or more goals.
He was tied for 9th in non-pp goals with 4 other guys including Kevin Connauton of Arizona with 11.
Gio had 12 Non-pp goals.
He was tied for 22nd in d-man pts. and 26th in defenseman PPG (more than 40 games played)
Those are not the offensive stats that get you paid in the top 10 d-man in the league especially when you don't play shut-down well or very physical. Gio is the 10th highest paid d-man by cap this last season.
Make Hamilton happy by assembling a team that gets into the playoffs.
