It that’s it. No fines, no requirement to build it properly. They’re also supposed to get an inspection when the foundation is done to ensure it’s at the right height. No way they did that.

That's nuts. Looking at those pictures I still can't believe they can build that close to the property line. Sucks that you have to live with it.
I bought a house years ago that had a two level deck put on the front not long before I bought it. Turns out the previous owner had a DP but neglected to get a BP (or vice versa, my memory is a bit foggy). City was pretty unequivocal that they were going to make me tear it down unless I got a ton of paperwork done and had it inspected in a pretty narrow window of time. Had to hand excavate all the footings and piles to show they were correct.
Looking back I really should have taken legal action against the previous owner, but it all happened right before I took off for NZ for a couple of months and when I got back I was too laid back to care anymore.
