People can tell what your objectives are if you're doing a song.
Like I said in that quote, do a song because you enjoy it and you mean it. Not because you think it's good PR, and that's the feeling I get with Nickleback.
It doesn't
always have to be about drugs, drinking and sex. Garth Brooks probably wasn't thinking "hmm, I'm gonna make a 'genuine' song when he did The Beaches of Chyenne or The Red Strokes" - similarly, I don't think Our Lady Peace was aiming for that with Theif, Red Hot Chilli Peppers with Californication, or whatever.
