Calgary is NOT on the cusp of winning at this point. It is not a vibrant nor great economy any longer and wont be for the immediate future, and is not a great destination as far as tax breaks etc.
He likely stays in NY, but there are just more attractive destinations as far as competitive and tax implications.
SJ and Vegas are the top ones imo.

I feel like Vegas is an interesting one - seems great if you are 22. If you are 28, engaged to be married, and a prominent NHLer would you really want to go to Vegas? Would your wife really want to go to Vegas?
San Jose has always made the most sense to me. He just feels like such a natural Thornton replacement on that team. That area also just seems like a great place to live, and players seem to love playing there.
Honestly I think Calgary does have a shot but all the rumored pieces (Hamonic best friend, want to play in Canada, Calgary putting up $$$) would have to be true for there to even be a small chance.
I also think it's tough to say Calgary is not on the cusp of winning. This league is so tight. Winnipeg looked like they should fire their coach and GM last year, this year they are 2nd in the league. Things can turn around quickly.
