Certainly, it's pretty easy. People get fed up with their 'current life' and up and leave [situation] rather frequently. Calgary has roughly 10 people reported Missing a day,

Most of those start with "They didn't come home at the proper time."

When the investigation would get around to work, it'd most likely ask people when they last saw the person involved. "I saw him around noon, but not after. He usually says goodbye to me, but not always. He was having a rough day, may have just left to go to the bar or something."

People storm out of work all the time. It's also not a crime to be "Missing" and to take off and start everything over (usually).

It'd be a long time before, if ever, the investigation got around to "Did he accidentally drop into a wall and die." He'd most likely be found by the building maintenance staff before then...which would solve the investigation.
