So where do we think Thanos is at the end of the movie?

In the comics they have the inside of the Soul Gem as a Paradise for the person trapped inside. In the movie, Thanos, flashes into the Soul realm when Child Gamora asks him what it cost him, Then it flashes to his farm. His body was damaged by the God killing Axe so does he still exist in the corporeal world?

This could give Nebula the opportunity to steel the Gauntlet from Thanos' body and become the Villian in 4 where Thanos is rescued from the Soul Gem to help defeat Nebula.

So loosely incorporating some of the main themes of the comics as Thanos as a Villian almost doesn't make sense given his motivations.

I also liked Red Skull looking like death as a bit of a shout out to the death theme from the comics.
