ROR is good offensively, excellent defensively, is elite at face-offs and the PK, and has a motor that doesn't quit. So he's a guy you can put out on a top-2 C role, and he can play a shut down role against the opposition's top line. One way to look at it is who's more elite: a 5/3 (offense/defense) C, or a 4/5?
He was good enough to make Team Canada as a centre. And he just turned 27 (2 years younger than Backlund). Personally, I think the day he joined the Flames he would immediately become the 3rd best all-around player on the roster, after Gaudreau and Gio.
