You heavily overrate Ryan O'Reilly then.
Over the last two seasons:
O'Reilly - GP: 153 G: 44 P:116 ESP: 63 Hits: 63 BlkShts:93 Takeaway: 123 (5 years at $7.5M left)
Backlund - GP: 163 G:36 P:98 ESP: 65 Hits: 109 BlkShts: 81 Takeaway: 138 (6 years at $5.35 left)
So you are giving up Brodie as the extra to get a guy who is pretty much an equivalent Even Strength player to Backlund but gets 9 more powerplay points per season as the focal point of a pretty strong powerplay in Buffalo. Plus spending an extra $2M in cap space for that player.
That is ridiculous if you think that Backlund + Brodie is not good enough value for O'Reilly.
The Fox + Bennett for Hayes trade is a little closer but IMO if you're going to move those two players you better be trying to package for an elite player.
In this scenario you are moving Backlund + Brodie + Fox + Bennett and aren't getting an elite player back, and really are just slightly upgrading Backlund and Bennett while giving up a top 4 d-man and a potential top 4 d-man. That would be horrible asset management.
That package of players is way better than what we have seen in trades for guys like Seguin, Hall, Kessel, Thornton, etc in the past. If you are moving those players you better get an elite player back.
