If Valamaki, while still on his ELC, is not a better D-man for the Flames than Hamonic the Flames will continue to be an also ran team missing the playoffs as the default setting.
Also I agree with a lot of posters that point out that in the past the Flames were unbelievably bad at drafting in the 1st round.... that resulted in the miss the playoffs setting.
However over the last 3 drafts they have been making totally adequate in the picks in the top 3 rounds picks that a bulk of solid NHLers are picked:
2017 #16 Valimaki
2016 #6 Tkachuk #54 Parsons #56 Dube #66 Fox
2015 # 53 Anderssen #60 Kylington
With 7 picks in the top 3 rounds the Flames have not had a clear miss.
This year no picks in the top 3 rounds next year 2.
