For me, I don't think that's the lesson.
I think it's more about trading 1st round picks when you don't know where in the draft that pick will be.
It was different than the Hamilton trade in that we knew the exact position of those picks. And high picks are proven to be the most effective way in obtaining elite players.
Even Tampa had an off year last year and missed the playoffs. It's easy for things to go wrong in the season.
The only time you should make a kind of trade like this is when the player you are getting back is truly a game breaker. Hamonic just isn't close to that.
Hell, even look at Ottawa. They traded for a player that many people would probably classify as a game breaker. Now they have to give up their 1st in either this draft or next draft. And it's going to be a high pick. That's the last thing that franchise needs.
