There are both mechanical and electric fuel pumps, and a cross-feed mechanism on that machine. More than one thing must have went wrong here if a fuel pump is to blame.
They could have simply run out of fuel, which would be a head-scratcher.
Nice job by the flight crew to get the machine down and no injuries.
