I feel like you are confusing Otaku culture (and moreso western Otaku culture) with "anime" culture.

Anime is an art style. I don't think it's fair, and I don't think anyone would say something from Studio Ghibli for example (or many other respected series) is portraying women in any more of a negative light than anything from western culture.
