I find her fairly irritating most of the time but the back-story established in that first season, plus the guilt she carries for the death of Zac Adama, does, I think, realistically creates a tortured soul pushing others away.
Interestingly, you might remember the whale of a fight she and SIX had on Caprica at the end of Season One . . . . . both actresses, in real life, had fight training prior to the episode and made it deliberately contrasting, Kara in more straight-forward boxing and SIX more in the martial arts area.

Don't get me wrong, they did a great backstory retelling and made her to me a completely unsympathetic character. There was no real excuse for her when she was getting off on being an avenging angel and shooting people out of the launch tubes. She has no sense of justice, she has a sense of revenge, and she's dangerously self destructive in that she wants to take people with her when she goes. The actress to me does a great job, but the character to me isn't as much flawed as she's a 1 dimension sink point of angst and stupidity.
I mean the Lee Adama is flawed and conflicted in his own sense but at least he puts his sense of duty above everything else, and because of that he's a good soldier and maybe a bad human being.
Tigh is neither a good soldier or a good human being, but he's certainly addicted to excess.
Admiral Adama to me is to main character in this play as he's being forced to go from being an outright black is black white is white rigid soldier to someone who has to go to shades of gray to preserve his race. His journey is the most interesting.
But this show is focusing too much on the whole everyone is guilty of some crime thing, and get on with focusing on the task at hand and tahts finding earth and staying one step ahead of the (surprise surprise) clearly conficted Cylons.
I remember reading an interview about the fight and the fact that a lot of the blows landed, which is interesting.
