You clearly haven't watched him. I have, every season he's been in the league and almost all of the Panthers' games.
His compete level nowadays is excellent and he has developed into a very good two-way player. He plays a north-south type of game where his hockey sense is just fine. Good along the boards but isn't really effective in a sideways type, cycle game. In that sense you can criticize his hockey sense.
But comparing him to Colborne is absurd. Colborne was tissue soft and while Bjugstad isn't a banger he will drop the gloves for his teammates or lay a hit if needed. And just overall he is a much, much better player.
The biggest concern with him would be the injuries that he's suffered the last couple of years.
