GG would not have had much leverage but Travis Green, Phil Housley and Bob Boughner only make 1M a year and they were all hired a bit more recently. Capfriendly also lists Blashill at $800k/year and he has won a Calder Cup in the AHL which is a better resume than GG.
The guys with leverage make more money. In Peters' case
- He had coached past his "beginning" contract, having signed a two year 1.6M extension.
- He was under contract, so Calgary has to give him reasonable incentive
- He has more NHL coaching experience than any of the above did when signing their deals
There's no inherently right way. Plenty of good coaches have to start somewhere.
