OTOH Trotz has always seemed to a coach that builds a 'team' and gets the most out of players. Granted he doesn't have much playoff success to hang his hat on but we need to become successful in the regular season before considering ourselves to be Stanley Cup contenders.
YMMV

What exactly is the definition of "modern coach"? Glen Gulutzan was supposedly a modern coach. That didn't turn out so well. Most of the best coaches in this league have been around for a while so I feel "modern coach" doesn't really have any correlation to success. I personally don't care about the approach as long as there's a track record of success. AV has had a lot of success in this league, more so than Trotz. I think Trotz is also a good head coach but I don't know how anyone can say he's a better coach than AV as there's no evidence statistically to support that.
