It is a narrative because it's only had an advantage compared to past expansion teams. That advantage is meaningless versus established NHL teams who they are actually competing with (and beating).
They were still picking from the bottom thirds of the 30 other rosters. Deeper squads suffered more and gave up better players, and like I said, that's as much due to depth in the sport as anything.
There's no need to disparage Vegas for what they've done; you're not, but many are. As I said, pretty much everyone looked at their roster in July and snorted and laughed. Nobody thought they would even sniff the wildcard let alone a convincing division win and soundly sweeping aside their first round opponent.
