I suppose it's too bad - maybe he got HC gigs too early in his career and now won't get any more no matter what he does at other levels.

I think in the near term you are correct. Long term I disagree. Gulutzan is still young. 5-10 years as an AC on a perennial winner/playoff team will give him the necessary experience/clout. Guys like Sutter, AV, Hitch, Q, Keenan all took a few teams (and ups/downs) to become the coaches they were near the end. On good scenario for Gulutzan would be to join the leafs once their AC is hired by another team as head coach and learn from Babcock.
