With a young team like they have, there is so much to learn about competing in the NFL, especially at the QB position. It wasn't hurting anything or anyone to have Rodgers watching for a 2nd season from one of the best to EVER play the position.
Favre wanted to play, he gave his team the best chance to win.....it was a no-brainer to allow him to start and finish the season.
The only benefit of him retiring this year would of been to free up some salary cap, but the Packers have stated they wont play the FA game to the extent some teams do, wishing to build through the draft instead. Not a bad philosophy IMO...look at the top teams around the league year after year....how did they get there and stay there?

The other benefit would be to give the QB of the future some experience. 2006 is a dead end season for Green Bay, now would be a good chance to look at the future.
