I'm pretty sure GG did not say "get lots of shots but make sure they are from the perimeter and don't follow up towards the net". It may we'll be that some players thought getting lots of shots meant that, or were satisfied with that, or just didn't understand the concept.
To me second half Frolik is an example. He loves to shoot, but they aren't dangerous and he tended to coast in to the net thereafter. Jankowski is similar, and he has size and reach to get in to the tougher areas.
