That would be a dream trade. Backlund was deemed a necessary signing so we didn't lose him for nothing. Brad called it an overpayment in the press conference. That contract is going to throw off our cap structure as soon as he starts sliding from his point totals, which is likely to happen quite quickly here.
Basically that trade would do two things that other ROR proposals don't.
A) Takes $10 mil off our cap while adding $7.5 for ROR, allowing us to still add a significant winger
B) Removes a centre while adding ROR at centre, allowing Jankowski to continue to develop in the perfect spot (third line centre).
I love Backlund but taking a calculated, impersonal hockey approach? You drive them straight to the airport before Buffalo can change their mind. That would be a great trade for Calgary.
