He can make a Hamilton available but take a page from Sakic (man I never thought I'd say that) and wait it out. You don't need to make a move if you don't get the key pieces you are looking for.

He's signed.

There's no gun to anyone's head.

Just methodically go about it.
Agreed.

In the EDM situation, everybody knew EDM had to deal a forward for a dman and therefore other GMs were able to leverage Chiarelli and lowball him. Treliving doesn't have to trade anybody. He can listen to offers on Hamilton and Brodie and decide if any of them make sense. We certainly aren't forced to deal a dman for a forward but if you look at it, it makes a lot of sense given our organizational depth at every position. Treliving is a dealing from a position of strength. We aren't desperate to trade anybody. We have high value assets at every position. Treliving is free to decide what asset is the best asset to be used to improve the team and that will in part depends on what offers he gets. I'm not sure he even goes as far as to actively shop a guy like Hamilton or Brodie. He can sit back and wait for someone who is desperate for a defenseman to make him an offer he can't turn down. Just because of timing its likely it could happen leading up to the draft or at the draft.

I think the Flames are in a great position to continue to upgrade the roster. Dealing Hamilton would hurt a bit offensively in the short term but long term I think we have the pieces to replace him. Dealing Brodie is even easier to replace as I think Kulak might be able to immediately replace him without any loss in ability and you might have a guy like Valimaki or Andersson replace Kulak on the bottom pairing. Hamilton does stick out as the guy we could sell high on IMO. I think his value really is huge at this point and I do think he does show a lack of commitment to be the best he can be in his own zone. I don't think he's a "problem" player or that he needs to be dealt. It's certainly okay to have a defensemen on your roster who is a bit one-dimensional offensively. But I think given his strengths, weaknesses and value that he may make the most sense to use as an asset this summer. But if Brodie can get you the forward we need, I'd trade Brodie over Hamilton for sure as I think Brodie is even more replaceable on our team.

Should be interesting to see where Treliving goes. I know some people don't love his track record on trades but I think he's got a very good track record in trades so far so I have a lot of faith in his ability to improve the club via trade.
