He's shown more than Lazar in his short career, and he has the draft pedigree. Doug MacLean was commenting earlier in the season that some teams are interested in Bennett. So I don't think you go out and trade with whoever will give you a 2nd rounder. When teams ask about him, you listen to their offer. If you get something that has promise, like someone else's young player your scouts like who isn't reaching his potential, you make the deal.

Not if his value will be even lower in another season or two.

This is a classic case of a player needing a change of scenery. And if he really is a bust, you want to move him while he still has some value. Lots of cases of players drafted this high getting a decent return at draft+4, and then getting worse and worse returns as they bounce around the league. You think the Isles aren't glad they got rid of Griffin Reinhart when they did? Or the Blue Jackets that they got something for Gilbert Brule? Should the Isles have hung onto Ryan Strome? Trading Bennett this off-season may actually be selling high.
