I agree completely with you OP. I'm not sure where all of the vitriol has come from either to be honest. Your comment about how everyone here are _fans_ really struck a chord with me. I find it hard to discuss the flames here because there is an incessant need to constantly crap on everything this team has done. Any compliment on my favorite sports team on a fan site for said sports team needs to be a bulletproof argument or you will have a gang of people jump on you to tell you why you're wrong and the flames suck. I know people dont like to hear it, but this is sports. Some years you just dont have it, and this is one of those years. You deal with it and move on, better luck next year.
I dont subscribe to the notion that this place is so hostile because they sucked this year, as has been mentioned in previous topics discussing the temperature of CP this year. If that was the case, this would have been an un-readable troll board for 4 of the last 6 years. Personally, I've been visiting less and less and posting less and less as the mood around here is extremely toxic.
I know I myself can often lay on way too much snark and I'm going to make a conscious effort to not do it.
One thing I will say is that there have been a couple of extremely polarizing, non-on-ice topics that are not conducive to civil discourse, that being the various arena and olympic discussion threads. I dont know where you would put them, or if there's a place they belong other than here, but I really think those two topics really set the tone for FOI the last little while. Whatever you think is the right way for either topic, you probably feel very strongly about it. Some people tend to let the hostility present in those discussions spill out to other, non-related ones.
I dont know, its a real shame. I felt better when we all scapegoated butler for being awful, but it was almost in a 'he's OUR plug' type of scapegoat instead of the continual bashing of everyone and everything flames related, including(and sometimes especially) fellow flames fans
