The fact you boil up every thing you are missing to simply a "few angry speeches behind closed doors" is a testament to how truly out of touch we are in regards to what we think we know as fans.

I just base that on having played multiple sports competitively throughout my younger years and having many coaches. The teams have partially taken on the temperament of the coach. At the same time they have systems, they have an idea on where a player should play and when they should play. They aren't sports psychologists or therapists. They are there to extract the best results out of a group. Just because its the NHL doesn't mean there is some sort of magic that goes on. Going big time isn't because you reinvented the coaching wheel. Every coach has different ways of doing the same things. Some are personal, some are impersonal. No doubt we are missing things, but in my eyes its a 20% not a 90%. In regards to players, that's where I would say I'm missing 90%.
