Generally they (the gifts) are things that are meant to provide a nice distraction, or signify that someone else is thinking about them.
Money is often to relieve stress so they don’t have to worry about bills or costs of certain things, and can just focus on healing (mentally or physically).
I understand both gestures, and I think both are remarkably kind. Good on these coaches.
