Robbie Ftorek was twice fired with less than 10 games remaining. In both cases, the teams were going to the playoffs.
In 2000, Ftorek was fired by the Devils with 8 games left and replaced by Larry Robinson. They went on to win the Cup.
I guess there's some logic in trying to shake things up prior to the playoffs, but if you're not making the playoffs, there's no reason to do a late-season firing.
