This was 100% a failure on Gulutzan in not dressing Stewart. It is a fricken rather meaningless game. He knows they are dressing Lucic. Why the heck did the Flames even bother picking up Stewart from waivers if not to play him exclusively against the Oilers?
IMO, Stewart plays, and he gets sent over the boards as soon as Lucic starts taking runs at guys and trying to make his presence felt. I would bet at that time, he doesn't get a chance to slash Smith, doesn't slash Giordano, and Smith probably doesn't feel the need to go after him. Most of all, Glass wouldn't have to get his face caved-in trying to stick up for his team.
Some people think you just 'ignore it'. Sometimes you can't. When you have a guy that is going around and taking runs at guys, slashing guys, and then giving guys punches... you simply can't turn the other cheek and wait for an official to get him off the ice. Sometimes officials start handling that way too late. Sometimes you do need an answer for that.
Gulutzan dropped the ball with his lineup decision. Stewart should have been the guy dressing tonight, not Glass. Glass could have played the next game. Stewart should have been in this one. You only have to look at the lineup card to figure that one out. I hope both Burke and Treliving give Gulutzan some grief over that decision.
I also hope everyone in that locker room went out of their way to personally thank Glass and gave him a big pat on the back. Good on Smith for talking about him in the media - Glass earned a tonne of accolades and respect out there last night.

So far Stewart has shown no sign that he would have stepped up.
