In this case, putting players with better defensive awareness was the proper coaching decision.
Putting Foo on the ice, who's not fully up to speed with NHL defensive responsibilities would be silly.

It's a meaningless game. I don't see a point in bringing in Foo and then sitting him most of the third period when he's being evaluated for his offence. It would've been more fitting to put him against the best to see how he'd do rather than protect a one goal lead. In regards to his defensive awareness, he did show that he can bust his butt going back in the defensive zone a few times.
