This is going to sound cheesy, but Lucas for all of his faults in dialogue writing, viewed Star Wars as his baby and it was genuinely a labor of love.

Even with Disney bringing in directors who were fan boys, its not the same thing. Also with George at the helm, there was a certain consistency to the whole thing that was really lacking in the first two trilogy stories.

Right now Rogue one was an exception because it was a one story movie.
