What you are missing is that your system almost completely disassociates your own ongoing performance from the rankings. Get lucky and take down a Nadal or Federer and get 900-1000 points? That's the full equivalent of winning four or five matches to win a Masters event.
Why should catching fire for one day be potentially worth as much as or more than winning one of the 5th-13th most important tournaments in the world?
