It has value. My wife's step brother earned his full degree at Harvard and went on to play in the AHL before going to Europe to play into his 30s. When he came back to Canada, he got a job in his field almost immediately. I think there is favouritism though because he played hockey. For a regular person, it might not be as easy.
Also, you have to consider that he might not end up having a long career. Most prospects don't make it, so hedging his bets could be a good move.
