He may be inconsistent but at least he is showing he can pull together a 20 goal season and provide some physical play, create space. He's also cheap and likely will never command a large salary. If he does, then he's earned it with a huge year next year. He's also a prime candidate to excel in a slightly lesser role if BT actually goes out and lands a proper top 6 RW in the offseason. I'd take second or third line Ferland in a heartbeat over scrap heap Bennett or Brouwer.

If there was any consistency to Ferland's play, he should have been a 30 goal guy this year. Now, that's too much to ask on an ongoing basis, but given he was at 20 in January and then disappeared, that's a concern.
Put Matt Tkachuk on that top line with Monahan and Gaudreau, and you get the same idea as what you wanted out of Ferland, but better.
Could a Ferland-Backlund-Frolik line work both offensively and defensively? Sure. But I think you could still improve that. And that most likely pushes Ferland down again.
From there, it becomes easy to see why Ferland could be offered up. He's too inconsistent for the top line, and you lose too much offence by pushing him down.
