This drove me crazy about the flames for years and years. Then Hartley’s pressure system created tight gap control and you could see the change overnight. D were breaking up plays and moving the puck up ice quickly. You need that now that teams carry the puck in instead of dump and chase. Doesn’t surprise me that Gulutzan hasn’t clued into that, honestly he has been way over his head from the beginning. He wants the D to retrieve pucks and then flip them out to center ice, because 26.7% of 5v5 goals are scored when the D fail to clear the puck out of their zone after getting possession. Or some bs like that. Teams don’t dump pucks much anymore so it’s simply a terrible system.
