Edit:

My quick scribble calculation:

If we can get rid of Michael Stone and replace him with Andersson, and sign Jankowski to a deal at ~1.5 million, we could throw approx. 12.7 million for 1 year at him.

Gaudreau (6.75) - Monahan (6.375) - Kovalchuk (12.7)
Tkachuk (.925)- Backlund (5.35) - Frolik (4.3)
Bennett (1.95) - Jankowski (1.5) - Ferland (1.75)
Hathaway (.650)- Lazar (.950) - Brouwer (4.5)
(extra forward ~ .650)
48.65 million for forwards

Giordano (6.75)- Hamilton (5.75)
Brodie (4.650)- Hamonic (3.857)
Kulak (1) - Andersson (.755)
(extra d ~.650)
23.412 Million for D

Mike Smith ( 4.25)
Rittich (1)
5.25 million for G

Cap: 78 Mil
Buyouts: 904,167
Committed: 77.012
Total:77,916,167
Remaining: -83,833

Would an enormous contract be enough to bring him here for a season? Would it even be worth it for us?
What's the alternative? We can just trot out the same players as we have now and watch them struggle to score again. Or we can trade more imaginary assets for poorly scouted players again. Or we can try to sign Rick Nash and Kovalchuk, throw big money at both of them for 1 year and just go for it.

We are in a unique 1 year window where we'll have the cap space to sign whoever we can that is willing to take a 1 year big money deal. The summer after we'll owe Tkachuk his big raise, possibly Ferland, possibly Sam Bennett, possibly Mike Smith or a new goaltender altogether. All I know is, I don't want to see the same forward group next season.
