I think what Steinberg was saying was that *if* Tre did put try to lottery-protect the Flames 1st rounder (and Steinberg's admits he didn't know if Tre did or did not attempt this) then NYI may have replied that the trade was a no-go.
Tre (and everyone else, including media & fans) were pretty confident we were a playoff team, so it wasn't worth walking away from the deal over it.
Again, this is a pretty big "if" here. But essentially, Steinberg was saying that Tre isn't stupid, nor is Snow. They full-well knew about conditional picks and lottery protection clauses and like lottery-protection is not something Tre would accidentally omit or try to slip under the radar of the deal.
