I know what you mean. When we lived in Alberta, my wife and I didn't really realize how noticeable our accents were. Now we could spot a Canadian by overhearing them speaking. When I talk to my in-laws, I can hear their accents big time. Apparently, we've also lost our own Canadian accents a little. I guess 9 years will do that. (yikes!)

Re: Chicago--couldn't agree more. That has to be the most grating accent ever. They can't say "jacket"--it's "jeeyacket." Nasal, grating, harsh, everything.

New York accents are cool, though.
