Default Help! Need inventory tracking system.

I am trying to set up an inventory tracking system at work. We are a small company that has a lot of equipment come in and go out. It is hard to keep track of with serial numbers and spreadsheets.

I have been given a $1000 budget (we’re a small company) and asked to set up a better inventory tracking system.

I am thinking a portable barcode scanner and labels would be the way to go. Something comes in, we slap on a barcode sticker, scan it, record the data and hand it out. Once a month somebody runs through the company, scans all the equipment and updates the status if it has moved or broken.

Needs to be portable and less than $1000. Any suggestions? Anybody got any experience with this stuff?

I am thinking of these guys.
