It does not encourage playoff races, it makes it nearly impossible to catch up.

It also encourages defensive play such that the better strategy is to try not to get scored on rather than to score goals... in a league that can't figure out how to increase excitement and scoring. A team that wins 0 games in regulation but goes to overtime 90% of the time will have a better record than a team that wins 60% of its games in regulation but only gets to overtime 10% of the time.

So either they're stupid, delusional, or most likely, they just don't think that much about it and so answered the poll question with "it's fine I guess".
Haven't people ran the numbers to show that a 3 point system doesn't drastically effect the standings order from the 2 point system? We have seen first hand with the Flames this season that the coach in fact does play conservatively in the 3rd period to get the single point so I don't necessarily agree that making a regulation win worth 3 points is going to make conservative coaches risk guaranteed points available in extra time just to get that extra point. I feel plenty would be happy playing conservative to ensure one point over going for it and risking zero points. The only time this may come into play is late in the season when teams are facing mathematical elimination situations and need 3 points but most of the season I don't see it changing much.
