A goalie that was going to be significantly better and proven was likely to cost a pretty penny. My guess it would've been a second rounder. Since we didn't have that it was going to have to be more creative.
And then people would've been over him for mortgaging the future and not giving young guys a chance and hampering their development, so they when they played junk like this next year, he was to blame for not letting them play this year, rather then the truth they they just aren't ready for the pressure. So he couldn't win even if that goalie came in and got this team 8 points people would still not have liked it and assumed these two guys could've done it with out giving up assets.
But I'm guessing Treliving agonized over that regardless of the price. If he knew for sure that the next 4 games the Flames would have gotten only 1 point, and 1 or 2 below average goals per game, at the wrong time went which prevented decent efforts go for not, where the Flames could've legit had 7 or 8 points with better goaltending, he would've paid that price.
