The problem, to me, has become obvious that the Flames only have 2 NHL caliber forward lines. And most of the forward core is young.
Surrounding them with talent would have done much more than trying to surround them with 'veteran leadership'. That is on Treliving.
Individual talent and skill is there. And proven as you say.
This team, with this roster as is and as has been, lost out on, or gave, SJ, LA, and Anaheim, about 10 points in late November to mid January, in games where they clearly outplayed, but couldn't get the 4-1 goal or hold the two goal lead that should've been more, and allowed those teams back in games.

Add similar style losses in losses to Buffalo, 3 to the Oilers, and the Vegas meltdown at home and this team could have easily. 14 to 16 more net points to some of these teams they're separated by 3-8 points, as crazy as that sounds, by keeping the foot on the gas and finishing those games off that they were in full control of instead of letting teams hang around.
And that's on the coach. You see at happened when he went overboard with the stick toss, players responded. It was a desperate act but worked for 7 games in a row. But that stick throw wasn't sustainable, not is that sort of fire and style from GG and the Flames.and the roster that could've has so many more points going into the all star break didn't.
Confidence in coach continues to wane, and just like he couldn't get the buttons pushed to finish teams off, he doesn't have the ability to snap them out of a funk, because again, he doesn't have the confidence.

Long story short, this roster has been dominant in many more games them the past 5 seasons. When the roster has needed the coaching staff to push them to finish games, they've failed. Confidence has eroded and players have been using thier talent to get by. But toss in the loss of the goalie, and the other crutch the players have been able to count on is gone, and the coaching staff again is if monies to the roster as far as team continuity goes.
