Internationally is interesting to look at so far as it just opened in Japan and hasn't opened in China. This movie will easily go over 1 billion world wide so will finish at least in the top 30 worldwide.
So no matter what metric you look at this movie fits into the most popular movies discussion despite the poor release date.

One thing to remember about releases of older movies is that there were a lot less people living in North America 50 years ago.
The craziest thing about that is that "Gone with the Wind" is still the highest grossing domestic movie of all time at 1.8 billion inflation adjusted. At that time there were only 130 million people in the USA. Almost everyone in North America must have seen that movie.
