Team identity or style is definitely a real thing. Craig Custance's book with a bunch of coaches going through their winning games had touched on how these teams came together with a philosophy, whether it came from the players or from the coach.

What the Flames are trying to be? A 4 line team that rolls consistently without breaking and playing as a 5 man unit.

What they actually are? A team who relies on its star players to drag them out of mediocrity and is only as good as their weakest link on any given night. Unfortunately for them, there seems to consistently be a weak link of some sort, whether it's goaltending outside of Smith, PP, specific players etc.
