I was listening to Boomer and Rhett this morning, and they completely tore into the Flames for their lack of resiliency, and I can't say I disagree with them. When Colorado tied it up, there was still half a game to play. Clearly more than enough time to mount a comeback, and yet the Flames just looked completely deflated and played like the game was over already when it was only 2-2.
They came out and played a much better 3rd, but I still didn't see the kind of desperation required to get themselves back into the game. I'm sure we were all hoping for some LA Kings-style push back from the Flames last night, but sadly it just didn't materialize.
Say what you want about Hartley's coaching, but that team had a ton of confidence and they didn't throw in the towel when bad things happened to them over the course of a game. What's weird though is that this is essentially the same core group of players with only a handful of new additions. There's no reason this team shouldn't be able to battle back when they get down a couple of goals.
The rigid system that this coaching staff employs doesn't seem to allow them to mount a proper attack when trailing. If the coach would just let the guys play, and maybe utilize his best players more when we desperately need goals, I'd bet we'd see a lot more comebacks and resiliency from this group. But Gulutzan just stubbornly continues to roll 4 lines, hoping for a miracle. I really don't understand some of his coaching decisions, especially when the momentum swings the other way, or when they're trailing.
