Johnny Gaudreau is the closest and he wasn’t even on the scout’s original list. He was a wild card that Tod Button was hoping to grab in the late rounds. That’s the problem with this organization, speed and skill is not their priority, they care more about guys who play with edge and truculence under Burke’s reign. That’s why we signed Troy Bouwer long term and gave up a 2nd for Lazar and chose plugs like Hunter Smith in the 2nd round.
Is there any wonder why Burke’s core was dismantled and why all of a sudden the Maple Leafs are one of the best teams in the league? It’s because they have talents like Marner, Nylander, Matthews and etc. Pure skill players who can drive play and break games wide open in a single shift. I watch the Leafs a lot and even though they give up a lot of goals and chances, they can outscore their problems which is something we can’t do.
